SURF CITY SPLASH FOUNDER -LEE LOVE’S STORY (Stay tuned as I will be interviewing Lee at Zack’s 12/31/19 Bucket List Coach Web Show on YouTube!)
Once upon a time, in the mid-1990’s, Lee Love was at Balboa Beach where they were having a “Polar Plunge” and handing out certificates to participants. Of course, she would be one of them! She treasures that certificate to this day!
Flash forward to July 2000 when Love was inducted as President of the Huntington Beach Sunrise Rotary Club. The club met every Wednesday morning at Duke’s (where she first met Brett Barnes and “Uncle” David Nuuhiwa). One day in November of 2000, Love was walking down Main Street and met Michael Parks as he was handing out flyers for a “New Year’s Day Polar Plunge at the Pier”. Flashing back to her Balboa memories, Love realized this could be a great fundraiser for non-profits while fostering a local and international community at the Pier Plaza (thus the initial moniker of “Huntington Beach Pier Plaza Plunge”). On January 1, 2001, Rotary held it’s first New Year’s Day fundraiser with Huntington Dog Beach as the beneficiary (Love co-founded DogBeach.org in 1998 with Martin Senat).
A few years later, Love joined the Huntington Beach Host Lions Club, and they added the now traditional pancake breakfast to the event. When she became Executive Vice President on the Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum Board of Directors, Love facilitated a transition of the “Surf City Splash” from Lions to the Surfing Museum.
Through the years, the Splash has grown while Huntington Beach has become an international destination point. Our city has always had big dreams, and many have come to fruition over the past 20 years or so. Now an annual tradition in Surf City, the Splash has generated thousands of dollars for non-profits such as Dog Beach, Canine Companions for Independence, Therapeutic Riding Center and other local charities. Currently, the Museum is the primary beneficiary.
When the 2019 Splash was cancelled due to high winds and rough surf, Love decided that would never happen again. “It’s a New Year’s Day Beach Bash Splash!” she says. “The focus from now on is defining ‘Splash’ as making an impact (maybe by competing in the costume contest!) not necessarily running into the ocean and risking the sting of a ray in the sand!” She emphasizes that anyone braving the ocean should do the “Surf City Shuffle”, and stay within the area the SUP patrol sweeps out any stingrays.
Currently, the Surfing Museum is in a management transition, and she was asked to coordinate the 20th Anniversary event in late November. Love took the entire month of December to totally focus on the event. “It’s been a wild ride,” she says. “I couldn’t have done it without the support of this great surfing community. It takes a village! And we have the best surfing village in the world!”
