I had the opportunity to trek down to Olvera Street to celebrate one of my favorite National Days! I am here in downtown LA, at the oldest street in LA called Olvera Street. Another LA Bucket List to partake in. Phenomenal merchants and restaurants to add to your list!

Before there was the La Luz del Dia restaurant, there was a La Luz del Dia grocery store, established in 1915 just a few blocks down on Main Street where the 101 freeway is today. It relocated to several places along Main Street including right next to the Plaza Church, North Spring Street, and in 1966 the Sepulveda House. Since 1941, the grocery store, then owned by Jack Berber, was a supplier to Christine Sterling, the founder of Olvera Street, when she lived in the historic Avila Adobe. Because of this long relationship, Ms Sterling always insisted that Jack Berber should open a business directly on Olvera Street. On September 16, 1959 this opportunity turned into a reality and Jack along with his cousin Pancho Cazares opened La Luz del Dia Restaurant.

La Luz del Dia is currently owned by Gregory Berber, son of Henry Berber, and grandson of Jack Berber. Pancho’s son Frank had also been working at the restaurant for many years.

I recently spoke with the current owner for a spot on the Podcast!!! Stay tuned for the interview date for this fall!

Every October 4th make sure to Celebrate National Taco Day. Founded in 2009, however National Day Calendar continues researching this food holiday!

Get one, two or three on National Taco Day. On October 4th, the day recognizes the savory tortilla stuffed with fillings. It doesn’t have to be Tuesday, so get out and enjoy your favorite.

The history of tacos predates the arrival of Europeans in Mexico. Anthropological evidence shows the native people living in the lake region of the Valley of Mexico traditionally ate tacos filled with small fish.  At the time of the Spanish conquistadors, Bernal Diaz del Castillo, documented the first taco feast enjoyed by Europeans. Hernan Cortes arranged this meal for his captains in Coyoacan. It is unclear why the Spanish used the word taco to describe this native food. One suggested origin is the word ataco, meaning stuff or to stuff.

In 1964, Roberto L. Gomez established The National Taco Council. The council sent a 55-pound taco to President Johnson in 1967. SEE FULL ARTICLE AT https://nationaldaycalendar.com/national-taco-day-october-4/

THE HISTORY OF OLVERA STREET (Source: https://www.olvera-street.com/)

Olvera Street, known as “the birthplace of Los Angeles,” is a Mexican Marketplace that recreates a romantic “Old Los Angeles” with a block-long narrow, tree-shaded, brick-lined market with old structures, painted stalls, street vendors, cafes, restaurants, and gift shops. There are several historical museums to visit too.  Olvera Street was created in 1930 “to preserve and present the customs and trades of early California.”  Many of the merchants on Olvera Street today are descended from the original vendors. They continue to create traditional events and celebrations free to the public!

Visitors from around the world stroll around the marketplace smelling the ever-present taquitos and tacos at the outdoor cafes, listening to the strolling mariachi music, and watching Aztec and Mexican folkloric dancers. The puestos offer handcrafted items such as pottery, belts, wallets, purses, leather, Mexican folk art, and souvenirs.

For holidays, the merchants go all out with Mexican music, dancing and celebrations for days including Los Tres Reyes, Blessing of the Animals, Los Angeles City Birthday, Cinco de Mayo, Mexican Independence Day, Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead), the Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe and Las Posadas.  Olvera Street continues to be a major tourist stop attracting as many as two million visitors per year from all over the world.

A 50-minute, historic walking tour of El Pueblo de Los Angeles is conducted by Las Angelitas del Pueblo every Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and noon. Groups of 10 or more should reserve by calling El Pueblo’s Visitor Center at (213) 628-1274.
